Cumberland baseball has added a Hitting Camp for July 5-7 from 9 a.m.-Noon for ages 6-12 at Ernest L. Stockton Field-Woody Hunt Stadium.
Cost is $75 per player for the three-day camp, which emphasizes techniques and philosophies of hitting from Cumberland University head coach and Hall of Famer Woody Hunt.
Daktronics NAIA Scholar-Athletes --
Cumberland baseball players Taylor Dorsey, Joseph Midgett and Sam Eichler were named 2017 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes, as announced late last week during the Avista NAIA-World Series in Lewiston, Idaho.
Student-athletes must be a junior or senior academically and maintain a 3.50 grade-point-average and above to be eligible for the award.
MSC Player of the Year
Cumberland's Austin Krajnak was voted Mid-South Conference Player of the Year while Rayden Sierra earned First Team All-Mid-South honors and Kevin Connolly and Hector Morales garnered Second Team accolades, as announced Thursday by the league office in advance of the conference tournament that begins Friday.
Krajnak leads the Mid-South in seven categories, including batting average (.398), hits (68), runs scored (52), RBIs (61), home runs (20), total bases (144) and slugging percentage (.842). The Little Elm, Texas, native ranks second nationally in home runs, sixth in total bases, seven in slugging percentage and 13th in RBIs.
Weather alters schedule -
Weather concerns have altered Cumberland's baseball series versus Shawnee State, moving it up a day to Thursday and Friday at Ernest L. Stockton Field-Woody Hunt Stadium.
Today's doubleheader is scheduled for a 1 p.m. first pitch.
Friday's single game is tentatively scheduled for 12 Noon, with every effort made to play sometime Friday.
Campbellsville series moved up
Cumberland's baseball series this weekend at Campbellsville University has shifted up a day because of snow and rain in the forecast on Saturday.
The Phoenix and Tigers will now play a doubleheader Thursday and a single game Friday at HIG Field.
Thursday's doubleheader begins at 12:30 p.m. Central Time and Friday's single game also starts at 12:30 p.m. CT.
Forecasts call for a 90 percent chance of rain and snow and 31-degree temperatures on Saturday in Campbellsville.
Cid Cozart inks with CU
Watertown High senior Cidney Cozart signed scholarship papers recently to continue his education and baseball career at Lebanon's Cumberland University.
He's joined by his parents Adam and Keri Cozart along with brother Nolan Cozart and grandmother Debbie Thomas.
Phoenix slug four HR's
LEBANON -- Cumberland University hitters pounded out 13 hits in Friday afternoon's 11-7 win over Clarke University at Ernest L. Stockton Field.
Game Two of the doubleheader was scheduled for a 3 p.m. first pitch.
Phoenix hitters Kevin Connolly, Nick Mira, Austin Krajnak and Rayden Sierra all homered while Steven Hollis had two hits and drove in two runs.
Phoenix hosts FHU Feb. 14 at 1 pm
Cumberland's Travis Dohr was voted Mid-South Conference Pitcher of the Week on Monday after tossing eight shutout innings in a 10-0 victory over 17th-ranked Middle Georgia State, as announced by the league office.
Dohr was dominant in Saturday's doubleheader opener, allowing just five hits and a hit batter in eight innings.
Phoenix plays at Middle Georgia
Cumberland's baseball team takes a record of 1-3 into a three-game weekend series at No. 17-ranked Middle Georgia State.
Friday's first pitch is set for 2 p.m. at Stuckey Field in Cochran, GA. Saturday's twin bill starts at 12 Noon.
Jeff Luttrell to be honored
Cumberland baseball will host its annual Leadoff Dinner and Auction at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 27 in the Benton Jennings Center on the CU campus.
The evening includes a silent and live auction of baseball memorabilia as well as other donated items, with all proceeds benefitting the CU baseball program.
Cumberland will honor former player Jeff Luttrell during this year's festivities.
29 home games on tap
Cumberland University's Woody Hunt announced the 2017 baseball schedule earlier this month, which includes 29 home games and 25 contests against teams who played in last year's NAIA Championship Opening Round.
The Phoenix open the season with seven straight games and 10 of the first 11 outings on the road, taking on William Carey and Missouri Baptist in Hattiesburg, Miss., three games at Middle Georgia State, three contests at Lyon College and one outing at Bethel University.
Fundamental camp opens June 13
LEBANON -- Cumberland University's all-day fundamental baseball camp runs from June 13-16 for ages 8-14. The four-day camp lasts from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day and costs $180 per camper. The morning sessions will emphasize the fundamentals in all phases of the game, while the afternoon sessions will include game situations and scrimmages. Lunch will also be provided to each camper.
Cumberland will host a pitching camp for ages 8-14 from 9 a.m. until Noon on June 20-23. The camp emphasizes basic and advanced fundamentals of pitching and costs $100 per camper.
Wilkerson, Locante, Smith & Veras
Four former Cumberland baseball players - Aaron Wilkerson, Will Locante, Chipper Smith and Josciel Veras - began their minor league seasons this past week while two others are playing and coaching in the professional ranks as well.
Wilkerson has already started a pair of games for the Portland [ME] Sea Dogs in the Eastern League.
Brescia plays in Lebanon Tuesday
Due to weekend and continuing rain in northern Kentucky, Cumberland's Tuesday baseball game against Brescia University has been changed to a home game at 2 p.m. at Ernest L. Stockton Field-Woody Hunt Stadium.
Phoenix hosts four weekend games
LEBANON -- Ryan Dickison belted a two-run homer, collected two hits and scored twice, but Cumberland stranded eight baserunners despite posting 11 hits and 14th-ranked Tennessee Wesleyan got the game-winning run on a throwing error in a 5-4 win over the Phoenix in baseball action Tuesday at Ernest L. Stockton Field-Woody Hunt Stadium.
Weekend series has been altered
Cumberland's weekend baseball schedule has been altered because of forecasted frigid temperatures on Saturday and Sunday.
The Phoenix and Madonna University will now play a doubleheader Friday, Feb. 12 at Noon and a single game Saturday, also at Noon, at Stockton Field.
