To the Editor:
By now many of us have had an opportunity to reflect on the failed attempt to double the wheel tax here in Wilson County. Some are savoring the defeat while others are wallowing in sorrow.
No matter what side of the issue you are on, you can find comfort in the fact that this initiative did not fail because people do not support education. This measure did not pass because people are fed up with excessive taxation without truthful accountability.
From D.C. down to local government, we have seen a continual growth in the lack of transparency and duplicity by our elected officials. Yes most politicians promise not to raise taxes while campaigning, but they have short memories once they take office. As a result of this many admirable projects go unfunded. Not because people are against taxation, but, because they do not trust government handling their hard earned money.
Once government proves that they can again be trusted by the taxpayers, people will gladly support all equitable causes.
