MURFREESBORO -- Wilson Central led 6-0 early and held on for a 6-5 victory over defending state champion Dickson County Friday afternoon to win the TSSAA Class AAA softball title at Starplex.

The Lady Wildcats weathered the Cougar storm to end the season 41-7-1 while Dickson County went home 43-6.

"Dickson County is such a good team," Central coach Michael Shepard said. "We knew we'd have to score some runs. They've been coming from behind all week.

"We took advantage of some mistakes early, but they cleaned it up. I was a little worried, but the girls pulled it together."

WCHS took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Claire Smith came home on a wild pitch, and power hitter Katie Eakes squeezed home Morgan Powell from third with a perfect bunt.

The Lady Wildcats added four more in the second as a bases loaded grounder to second produced three following a series of poor throws by Dickson County.

The Lady Cougars settled down and chipped away at the lead, scoring three in the top of the third and two more in the fourth.

Dickson County finished with 11 hits, but Central starter Hannah Bodenhorn stranded 11 baserunners.

Bodenhorn finished with five strikeouts and two walks.

Dickson County's Brooklin Lee was tagged with the loss, allowing just three hitsb but walking five with just one strikeout.

Powell, Eakes and Shelby Woodard had the only hits for Wilson Central while Brooke Pfefferle (1) and Eakes (2) drove in runs.
