From Post staff reports
A Lebanon man was killed in an early morning one-vehicle crash Monday on U.S. Highway 231 North/State Highway 376 in the vicinity of the Sumner-Trousdale County line.
The incident occurred about 6:10 a.m.
Clifton Shipley, 57, of Lebanon Highway in Lebanon, was driving a 2007 Chevy DXL four-door Sports Utility Vehicle southbound on Hwy. 231 when he appeared to have fallen asleep and crossed over the northbound lanes and struck a bridge embankment. The impact caused the vehicle to overturn and landed in a creek.
Shipley was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident. There was no evidence of alcohol or drug abuse, but because a fatality occurred, blood alcohol and drug tests were requested as is standard in such cases.
The accident was investigated by Trooper Danny Fisher and Sgt. Kevin Norris of the Tennessee Highway Patrol, Cookeville office.
