On a recent Saturday at historic Nokes-Lasater Field, more than 30 local firemen and police officers squared off in a flag football game to help collect toys for the Lebanon Fire Department's "Spirit of Christmas Toy Drive."
Organized by the LFD's Bryce Bryant and Kevin Henson along with the LPD's Tim Kelly, the spirited, good-natured competition saw a truckload of toys collected for the Spirit of Christmas Toy Drive. The price of admission, organizers said, was a new toy.
And while the LPD emerged victorious, all involved were focused on the bigger picture.
"It was a great afternoon, even though we came out on the losing end of the scoring," Lebanon Fire Chief Chris Dowell mused. "But the kids were the real winners, and that's what is important."
Conducted by the LFD's third shift for more than 80 years, the Spirit of Christmas Toy Drive will help sponsor over 400 children this year through the Wilson County Christmas for All program. The LFD drive is also supported by a golf tournament, private donations and a Black Friday toy collection at Wal-Mart.
"The Lebanon Fire Department is our largest sponsor of children each year, and our success would not be possible without their support," Alan Ricketts, president of Wilson County Christmas for All, noted.
Anyone who wishes to donate to the Spirit of Christmas Toy Drive may contact LFD Lt. Brian Fountain at 615-443-2903 or bring their donations to the LFD Administrative Offices at 112 Hartmann Drive.
