COOKEVILLE -- Lebanon’s Lions Club Babe Ruth 14 year-old all-star completed their sweep of the District 4 tournament Saturday, July 12 with a 5-2 victory over host Cookeville in the championship game at the Parkview Complex.
However, at least five all-stars indicated they would not be joining the team for the state tournament in Johnson City this weekend, opting instead to play in the Continental Amateur Baseball Association 14 & Under World Series set for Lebanon -- which will be played at varius sites in and around the Cedar City.
Runner-up Cookeville is expected to represent District 4 in the state.
Cookeville jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second, but the Lebanon squad answered in the top of the third with two runs to tie the contest.
After Brent Baker walked, Cain Sloan drove a Phillip Roper fastball over the fence in left-center.
Sloan, who started the game at shortstop, relieved Dallas Horn on the mound after two innings to pick up the win. With an assortment of breaking pitches, which included a nasty knuckleball, Sloan walked two, hit two batters and struck out four while surrendering two singles.
Lebanon took the lead for good in the top of the fifth. Trevor Davis was hit by a pitch and then stole second. He then scored on a two-out single by Baker. The Lions added two more in the top of the sixth.
After Drew Erie reached on a fielder’s choice and pinch-hitter Skyler Beckerman walked, Eli Spickard delivered a two-out double to right-center, scoring Erie and Beckerman.
