From Post staff reportsLebanon Mayor Philip Craighead, going door-to-door in several Lebanon neighborhoods yesterday, said a full assessment of the damage caused by this past weekend’s flooding will likely not be known until later in the week.Craighead said he and other government officials are working with Wilson County Emergency Management, the local government agency responsible for reporting damages to the federal government for assistance. The mayor noted that a number of city workers, including fire, police and others, have registered several overtime hours since the crisis first erupted over the weekend. But the City of Lebanon was not the only local government entity to experience overtime expense and other costs related to the flooding.Wilson County Sheriff Terry Ashe said the expense of overtime hours in his law enforcement department will “run into the thousands (of dollars).”He said Tuesday officers in his department have been involved in rescues, blocking roads that were washed out and performing other duties related to the flooding. He also made note of another expense his department had over the weekend that got little attention.“We were called by the Trousdale County Sheriff’s Department to come to Hartsville and take their inmates out of their jail,” Ashe said.He said the Trousdale sheriff made the call to evacuate the jail at just the right time. “If he had waited much later it would have been too late,” Ashe said referring to the rising water coming in the jail.He said Trousdale County evacuated 32 inmates from its jail who are still being housed at the Wilson County Jail.Ashe and Craighead both said they were hopeful that local government will get relief from the federal aid being requested for the area to help offset the expense being incurred from the flood.
