Since 2002, the Shamrock Society of Lebanon has organized a fund-raising event known as The Low Country Boil. A desire to help neighbors battling cancer and have fun while doing so has fueled the group through the years, and that same spirit carries on this year with a new twist.
On Friday, Feb. 5, the Shamrock Society invites the community to a new event called Mardi Gras at the Capitol.
"This event will truly be a celebration of life, love and everything that is great about this community," says one member of the Shamrock Society. "Our goal is to be a blessing right here in this community and inspire hope for everyone involved."
The event will kick off at 6:30 p.m. with an old-fashioned, New Orleans-style funeral parade through the Lebanon Public Square. "We're going to put cancer in the casket," an event organizer noted. "Many of the members of this group have been touched in personal ways by cancer, and this event is intended to celebrate what cancer cannot take from us."
The event will take place at the historic Capitol Theatre. Dinner will be served at 7 p.m. with a New Orleans-inspired menu, including a surprise Mardi Gras-themed dessert. A live Motown band will provide music, and there will also be a cash bar, live auction and a few other entertaining surprises.
All of the proceeds from the event will stay in the local community to help Sherry's Run meet the needs of neighbors battling cancer. Guests at Mardi Gras at the Capitol will have the opportunity to hear from some of the patients that Sherry's Run has touched and how support for the organization can change lives and give hope.
"The Shamrock Society members have been a tremendous blessing to the work of Sherry's Run through the years," Sherry's Run Board Chair Tonyia Watson said. "It takes people with their passion, vision and willingness to give in order for this ministry to be so effective."
Few tickets remain for the event, and they are selling quickly. Tickets are $50 each and available at Mo'Cara, G.G.'s Jewelry & Gifts or the Sherry's Run office. Call (615) 449-2088 or (615) 925-2592 to purchase tickets or for additional details. To learn more about Sherry's Run, visit www.sherrysrun.org.
