LPD readies for safe holiday season

  Email   Print

This is a special time of year when we become busy planning, shopping and celebrating the holidays. It is also a time when we may forget to be mindful and become vulnerable to theft and crime. For this reason, the Lebanon Police Department would like to remind everyone that we can never be too careful or too aware in our preparation for the holiday season.

Our department will be taking these measures during the holiday season to ensure everyone's safety:

  • Extra patrols will be assigned to shopping areas, banks, restaurants and other high-traffic venues. We will utilize all divisions, including Patrol, CID, ESU, Reserve and CERT. Patrols will be both uniformed and plain-clothed.

  • We will utilize mobile surveillance cameras throughout the city to give us both real-time information as well as recorded footage.

  • We will partner with surrounding agencies to provide up-to-date information and support services.

  • We will strictly enforce traffic and parking laws to ensure safe passage and travel.

  • We will provide escorts for any business or group who requests it. Escorts for banking, closings or safety purposes are encouraged and will be provided upon request.

Here are some safety tips for you to consider during the holiday season;

  • Secure all property by locking cars, homes, garages and sheds.

  • Take your keys or store them in an inconspicuous place, not leaving them in plain sight.

  • Hide your belongings, whether in the trunk of a vehicle or in a safe area in your home.

  • Avoid driving/shopping alone or at night.

  • Park in well-lit areas as close to establishments as possible.

  • Never leave your car unoccupied with the motor running or children inside.

  • Secure your purse or bags, or better yet, shop with just enough cash or credit cards and keep them in your pocket, preferably the front pocket or other area that would be hard to reach as a thief.

  • Always be aware of your surroundings.

  • Only use ATM machines that are in well-lit areas and withdraw only what cash is needed.

  • While shopping, dress casually and avoid wearing expensive jewelry.

  • If possible, when shopping, leave small children at home to avoid unnecessary distraction and exposure to dangers.

  • Never allow children to make unaccompanied trips to the restroom.

  • Follow all traffic and parking laws to keep yourself and others safe. Don't drink and drive or drive distracted. Plan for designated drivers.

  • If you travel during the holidays, secure your property, have family or neighbors check on your home periodically, keep a few lights on or have lights set to automatic timers.

  • If you have package deliveries, request them to be delivered to a business, office or any location where someone will be present to receive them. Packages left in doorways and on porches are highly targeted by thieves.

  • Use every precaution to ensure your decorations, trees and displays are safe and don't pose any hazards to children, the elderly or pets.

  • Be mindful that criminals take advantage of people's generosity during this time of year. Always ask for identification or written information about any charities or causes before making donations.

We wish you a safe, joyous and peaceful holiday season and ask that you share this information with family and loved ones. As always, your police department is here to serve you, should you need us. We can be reached at (615) 444-2323 or by dialing 911 in an emergency.
