She was a member of the First United Methodist Church where she had taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, was a member of the hand bell choir, the Stephen Ministry, and had served on various committees. She was a member of the Garden Club, Jr. Women’s Club, Lebanon Women’s Christian Club, Leadership Wilson, Past President of the Tennessee Optometric Association Auxillary (TOA) and Past President of the United Methodist Women.
Mrs. Averitt was very active in community and school functions. She was a nurse for the Volunteers Mission to Guatemala. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Benjamin Paul Averitt.
She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Dr. T. Ross Averitt; children Teresa (Tim) Barlow of Gladeville, Kelly Vaughn (Audrey) Averitt of Cookeville, Stanley Ross (Kelly) Averitt of Lebanon and Amy (Mike) Wheeler of Murfreesboro.
Also surviving are siblings Edwin Garrett (Donna) Crowley Jr. and Susie (Gene) Hull -- both of Hendersonville; grandchildren Joel & Sarah Beth Barlow, Emily & Daniel Paul Averitt, Hailey, Hannah, Mattie & Andrew Ross Averitt, Stephen, Mary Ruth & Julia Wheeler.
Honorary pallbearers: The Questers Sunday School Class of the First United Methodist Church. Active pallbearers: David Bingham, Jimmy Harper, Larry Oakley, Mac McClusky, Ken Clinard and Sam Cardwell.
The family requests memorials be made to the American Cancer Society or First United Methodist Church.
