Mother of Memphis Mayor AC Wharton, Jr., and widow of the late local businessman AC Wharton, Sr., Mrs. Wharton died Monday, Dec. 19, 2011 at Lebanon's University Medical Center.

Lebanon's J.C. Hellum Funeral Homewas in chargearrangements.

A livelong member of the Market Street Church of Christ, Mrs. Wharton and her husband worked a variety of jobs in order to provide a college education for each of their five children -- AC Wharton, Jr., Mary E. Davis of Memphis, Ruth Wharton of Hermitage, Dr. Kenneth Wharton, M.D. of Chicago, IL and the late Velma J. Lowe.

The Wharton family operated a small store, located at the corner of Trousdale Ferry Pike and Baddour Parkway.

Mayor Wharton often said his mother would walk across the street at four in the morning in the winter just to turn on the heat to warm the store and then come back and cook breakfast for the family.

He said they all worked in the store at one time or the other and that the store taught him and each of his siblings important lessons about lifes values.

That store is now located in historic Fiddlers Grove at the James E. Ward Agricultural Center.
