Mid-South honors CU's Tyler Alford

Champion of Character Award
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -- Cumberland University catcher Tyler Alford has been named the 2015 Mid-South Conference Champion of Character winner at the annual awards banquet Tuesday night at the National Corvette Museum.

A senior out of Knoxville Powell High School, Alford selected by a vote of the conference athletic directors -- based on his academic and athletic achievement, campus and community leadership, future ambition and a demonstration of five core character values of the NAIA.

Alford, who sports a batting average of .323 with 23 runs batted in, was also named first team All-MSC.

Joining Alford as a first team selection is outfielder Justin Byrd. A senior from Rockwall, TX, Byrd leads Cumberland with a .331 batting average. He has seven homers and 32 RBI.

Outfielder Ryan Dickison and pitcher Stevie Smith were voted to All-MSC second team. Smith also was named to the Gold Glove team.

Academic All-MSC
Seventeen Cumberland baseball players were named Mid-South Conference Scholar-Athletes, as announced Tuesday by the league office. Student-athletes must be a sophomore, junior or senior academically and maintain a 3.25 grade-point-average and above to be eligible for the award.

Stevie Smith - 3.91, Management
Hector Viera - 3.87, Health and Human Performance
Andrew Woodfin - 3.75, Health and Human Performance
Jackson Yates - 3.50, History/Business.
