School names softball field in his honor
Mt. Juliet Christian Academy honored Don Wharton Monday, April 4, a career banker / business manager who loves to play in the dirt.
MJCA's softball field was named in Wharton's honor, who has for the past several years taken over responsibility for the maintenance and care of the school's athletic fields.
Following his retirement, Wharton turned his attention to turf management and has helped maintain MJCA's baseball, softball, football and soccer fields.
"Don is truly a friend to our kids, staff and school," said MJCA athletic director Paul Christensen.
Between games of Monday's doubleheader sweep of Lancaster Christian, Wharton threw out a ceremonial first pitch to his favorite Lady Saint player -- his granddaughter Abi Hildabrand.
"Don Wharton is one of those special people who would rather not be seen, heard or noticed," said MJCA Headmaster Mike Lee.
"For years as out school business administrator, he sacrificed countless hours as he led us to financial stability. A couple of years ago when Don 'retired' -- all that meant was he would coontinue to work with no pay.
"Don loves athletics, MJCA, First Baptist Church in Mt. Juliet and most of all our Lord Jesue Christ. His love for the Lord is demonstrated in so many ways, but very clearly in his love for our athletic facilities."
MJCA swept last week's doubleheader with Lancaster Christian Academy -- 17-0 and 18-0.
