Mt. Juliet Police Department will be sponsoring less fortunate children to take Christmas shopping this holiday season in its 5th annual Christmas with a Cop program.
The shopping will take place on Friday, Dec. 11, at 6 p.m. at Walmart in Mt. Juliet.
Many items such as toys and clothing will be purchased for the children. To gather funding for this event, the police department teamed up with HDP Motorcycle Shop and raised more than $5,400 through a sale of used TVs.
David Howell, owner of HDP, and Angela Humphrey, an employee at HDP, headed up the fund raiser for this program.
The Christmas with a Cop program continues to grow every year, since the program started in 2005 at Mt. Juliet Police. This year is the largest year yet with the police department sponsoring 28 children, which is five more compared to last year.
The children were selected with the help of local schools, community leaders and officers at the MJPD. There are a variety of ages participating in the program, which range from ages 2 to 17.
Each officer will be given $175 to spend on the child during the shopping spree, which is a $25 increase from prior years. During the shopping, the child is paired up with an officer so they can shop together.
