MJ's Gross, CU's Veras taken in draft
Wilson County native Ethan Gross has been selected in the 26th round of the MLB First Year Player Draft by the Chicago White Sox.
A 2010 Mt. Juliet High graduate, Gross just completed his senior year as the starting shortstop for the University of Memphis.
He was the 768th overall pick in the draft. He started all 59 games for the Tigers in 2014, batting .267 with seven doubles, 21 RBI and stole 12 bases in 19 attempts.
As a junior at Memphis, he was voted to the Conference USA All-Academic team.
The son of Richard and Teresa Gross, he played shortstop for former MJHS head coach Mark Purvis.
CU's Veras goes to the Reds
Veras, a second baseman as a junior, moved to shortstop as senior -- but injured a shoulder, limiting him to DH duties during the latter part of Cumberland's NAIA National Championship run.
A native of Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic, Veras hit .299 with four homers, 13 doubles and 39 RBI for the Bulldogs in 2014.
