Adams sparks Lady Bear blowout
GLADEVILLE -- Summer Adams scored 13 points in her first start of the season and helped lead Mt. Juliet to a 49-27 win at Wilson Central in Tuesday night's District 9-AAA headliner.
Adams worked behind the Wilson Central defense to score 10 points in the early stages of the second half as the Lady Bears stretched a 27-14 lead out to 37-19. The senior finished 5-of-6 from inside the paint.
Mt. Juliet took over sole possession for first place in the district with a 7-0 mark (18-2 overall). Wilson Central slipped to 16-5, 6-1 against district foes.
"We thought Summer's size could create a mismatch and give her some opportunities," said MJHS head coach Chris Fryer. "She stepped up and did a good job for us."
"I thought tonight was the best four quarters of defense our girls have played all year. We moved well and executed our game plan well. Ron (Degray) played on (Kendall) Spray, one of the best outside shooters in the mid-state, and held her to seven."
Mt. Juliet's defense forced 18 turnovers and limited Wilson Central to just 20 shots from the field.
"I thought we did a poor job of taking care of the ball," said Wilson Central coach John Wild, "our decision making was poor and we didn't attack them offensively. We were east-west drivers instead of north-south drivers and when you do that you're not going to get on the foul line. We've got to do a better job of being more aggressive on offense."
The Lady Bears knocked down 21-of-38 shots from the field (55 percent) while Wilson Central went 9-of-20 (45 percent).
Adams and Ron DeGray each had 13 points for the winners while Rae DeGray chipped in with 10. Ashley Roby connected on a pair of 3-pointers for six points.
Piper Elrod led Wilson Central will 11 points, including a perfect 3-of-3 effort on 3-pointers. Spray only attempted eight shots and was limited to seven points.
