COLUMBIA -- The Mt. Juliet Post 281 Riverdogs Junior Team placed second in the American Legion State Tournament July 13-15 -- falling to host Columbia Post 19 in the finals.

Team members include: Nolan Burgess, Jase Holder, Brandon Allison, Trent Wimmer, Aaron Colter, Cody Williams, Sam Lewis, Lain Hensley, Ethan Bult, Dylan Boehm, Jake Ferguson and Nick Baker.

Lebanon Recreation Dept.
The City of Lebanon Recreation Department is offering flag football this fall for boys and girls. This is non-contact league that focuses on the basic fundamentals of football.

The league is open to boys and girls ages five through eighth grade. Participants must be 5 on or before Aug. 1, 2017.

After 12 years in LSSD --
Tim Chappell, longtime teacher and coach at Lebanon's Walter J. Baird Middle School, is leaving the profession to pursue a career in private business.

An employee of the Lebanon Special School District for the past 12 years -- all at Baird Middle -- Chappell says the decision to turn in his whistle and fungo bat did not come lightly.

Lebanon 8U fastpitch squad -
CLARKSVILLE -- The Lebanon Hot Rods, a team comprised of 8U players from the Lebanon Girls Softball League, capped off a 20-9 summer tournament run by winning the United Southern Girls Fastpitch World Series earlier this month at at RichEllen Park in Montgomery County.

The Hot Rods defeated Mt. Juliet Gold 12-1 Sunday, July 16 in the finals.

Volleyball leads the way --
The NAIA honored 10 Cumberland athletic squads this week as NAIA Scholar Teams for the 2016-17 academic year.

Teams must obtain a 3.00 cumulative grade-point-average or higher for all eligible varsity student-athletes during the past academic year to garner the award.

Riverdogs place 2nd in 19U state
GALLATIN -- The Mt. Juliet Post 281 Riverdogs dropped a 15-3 decision to Columbia Post 19 Monday, July 24 in American Legion State Tournament held at Alexander Field.

Post 281 finished the summer season with a record of 20-7 overall. Curt Hoppe was the manager, Gavin Ford assistant coach and Dave Smith general manager.

Pitcher of the Week -
PEARL, MS - The Biloxi Shuckers snapped a four-game losing streak in a big way with a 7-0 victory over the Double-A Mississippi Braves Sunday with a big assist from a former Cumberland University All-American.

Southern League All-Star Aaron Wilkerson threw the first nine-inning complete game shutout in franchise history to bring the Shuckers within 3.5 games of first place. Wilkerson (9-4) was a calming veteran presence on the mound, and he carried the Shuckers to victory with a two-hit shutout.

PANAMA CITY BEACH, FL -- The Lebanon Stars 10U softball team took first place honors in the United States Fastpitch Association World Series Saturday, July 22.

A team comprised of players out of the Lebanon Girls Softball Association, the Stars knocked off the Texas Cyclones 8-1 to win the championship.

All-state lineman from FCS -
Navy junior offensive tackle Andrew Wood is on the Watch List for the Wuerffel Trophy, which is presented annually by the All Sports Association in Fort Walton Beach, Florida.

Named after 1996 Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Danny Wuerffel from the University of Florida, the Wuerffel Trophy is awarded to the FBS player that best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement.

Mt. Juliet High football player Jalan Sowell is being featured on ESPN SportsCenter Thursday, July 20.

Sowell, 16, who has chronic pulmonary embolism, had his wish granted as part of the 12th season of the award-winning ESPN "My Wish" Series.

Since its beginning in 2006, the series has fulfilled more than 60 sports-themed wishes for children with life-threatening medical conditions.
