8-A HOOPS -- Tigers win district title

Boys & girls will host region openers
HENDERSONVILLE -- Three Purple Tigers scored in double figures lifting Watertown High to a 65-61 victory over No. 1-seeded Goodpasture Saturday, Feb. 18 at Merrol Hyde Magnet School. With the win, WHS improved to 23-6 on the season and clinched the District 8-A tournament championship.

Coach Matt Bradshaw's squad will be back in action Saturday, Feb. 25 for a first round home game in the Region 4-A tournament.

The Purple Tigers got away from their fullcourt, trapping defense against Goodpasture and the tactic seemed to work as WHS built a 46-30 third quarter lead.

FCS & MJ Christian boys eliminated
Wilson County's entries in the D-II boys regional were eliminated from the TSSAA post-season with Wednesday, Feb. 15 first round losses.
A furious Friendship Christian comeback try came up short in a 64-57 loss to University School of Nashville at the Bay Family Sportsplex.
A No. 2 seed coming in, FCS trailed 14-11 early and 16-13 at the half.

TSSAA WRESTLING -- 27 locals headed to state

Eleven from WCHS, 10 from MJHS
Some 27 Wilson County grapplers have earned spots in this week's TSSAA Class AAA and D- II state tournament set for the Williamson County Ag. Expo Center. Round of 32 matches for Class AAA will begin Thursday at 3 p.m. followed by Round of 16 matches as 22 local boys compete for hardware.

Two girls, Kaitlyn Lee (120) and Megan Pruitt (125), both from Mt. Juliet High are among 81 females who go to the mat on Friday.

Wilson Central saw 11 wrestlers qualify through the Region 7-AAA tournament this past weekend at Mt. Juliet High.

BASEBALL -- Dohr earns MSC weekly honor

Phoenix hosts FHU Feb. 14 at 1 pm
Cumberland's Travis Dohr was voted Mid-South Conference Pitcher of the Week on Monday after tossing eight shutout innings in a 10-0 victory over 17th-ranked Middle Georgia State, as announced by the league office.

Dohr was dominant in Saturday's doubleheader opener, allowing just five hits and a hit batter in eight innings.

Blue Devils seeded first in tournament
Lebanon High basketball coach Jim McDowell has been voted District 9-AAAA Coach of the Year by his coaching peers.

McDowell has guided the Blue Devils to an overall record of 19-7 this season / 11-3 in the district, securing the No. 1 seed in this week's tournament.

Tournament play for the boys opens Friday, Feb. 17 at Campbell Brandon Gymnasium.

FCS & MJCA boys play tonight
FRANKLIN -- Friendship Christian's season came to a close Tuesday night as the Lady Commanders dropped a 64-32 decision to Battle Ground Academy in the opening round of the Division II East-Middle Region Tournament.

The Lady Wildcats pounced early, taking a 14-8 lead after one quarter and a 30-12 lead at intermission.

Bayley West and Hailey Pittman each had six points to lead Friendship Christian.

TMSAA state champions

Mt. Juliet Middle wins TMSAA Class AAA tourney
Mt. Juliet Middle School won the Tennessee Middle School Athletic Association Class AAA state basketball tournament, defeating Siegel Middle School 48-32 Friday, Feb. 3 in the finals at Dickson High School.

Riggs Abner led the way with 14 points and Josh Keck added 13 as the Bears ended the season 23-1 overall. Abner, Keck and Zach Blair were voted all-tournament.

FOOTBALL -- Lebanon's Moore inks with Bethel

All-county, all-district lineman
Lebanon High senior Jaden Moore signed scholarship papers Friday morning, Feb. 10 to continue his education and athletic career at Bethel University, an NAIA institution in McKenzie. Bethel is a member of the Mid-South Conference.

A three-year starter for the Blue Devils, Moore played several positions in the offensive and defensive lines, including center, guard, tackle and defensive end. He is expected to contend for playing time at defensive end this fall.

All-County, all-district athlete
Mt. Juliet Christian Academy senior Austin Collier signed paperwork Thursday afternoon, Feb. 9 to continue his education and football career at Bethel University, an NAIA institution located in McKenzie and a member of the Mid-South Conference.

Collier, who rushed for over 2,500 yards and 33 touchdowns in his time at MJCA, was called, "one of the good guys," by his coach Dan Davis.
