A Lebanon man was transported to Vanderbilt Medical Center via LifeFlight following a single-car accident on Saturday night.

Lebanon Police Officer Wayne Howard said that because the man is still in the hospital’s trauma unit he has been unable to interview him regarding the crash, but believes it to be a case of falling asleep at the wheel.

Billy Ray Bilbrey, 43, was traveling eastbound on Highway 70 when his car veered across all four lanes, hitting a telephone phone.

Howard said the accident occurred near the Cumberland Animal Hospital, and added that if Bilbrey had been a few seconds earlier he would have “been in the pond.”

“We still haven’t been able to interview him, but alcohol was not a factor,” Howard said. “There was no sign of him stopping so it could have been that he fell asleep driving – never touched a break, no skid marks on the road.”
