Panel nods LHS funding proposal

A new Lebanon High School got one step closer to reality Thursday night after a resolution to fund a $50 million bond for the construction project was passed unanimously through the Wilson County Commission’s Budget Committee.

The resolution, originally proposed by District 15 Commissioner Mike Justice, was co-sponsored by more than a dozen other commissioners by the time it was finally read Thursday night.

MJ mayor tries to move ‘retreat’ out of town

MT. JULIET -- In a move that was ultimately shot down by the City Commission, Mt. Juliet Mayor Linda Elam tried to tack onto the agenda an item that would move that board’s annual “retreat” outside city limits at Monday night’s meeting.

Explaining that the agenda item “was submitted in a timely manner” but “caught in the Internet netherworld” between herself and City Recorder Sheila Luckett, Elam attempted to suspend the rules and add the resolution to Monday night’s agenda. District 3 Commissioner Ed Hagerty and District 4 Commissioner Jim Bradshaw both objected, however, and the conversation heated up when Elam said she would overrule their objections and consider the item.

Pilot takes first solo flight at Lebanon Airport

A local flying enthusiast took his first solo flight Thursday morning under sunny skies and a bit of a breeze and landed perfectly on the runway as his proud parents watched.

In addition to being a student at RediAir Flight Support at Lebanon Municipal Airport, Dale Donoho, 21, of Lebanon, is also a fulltime employee there working as a lineman, or fueler, for other aircraft.

Wilson obesity rate ranks near the top

Tennessee, based on a recent report by Trust for America's Health (TFAH) and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF), has the fourth highest rate of adult obesity in the U.S. at 30.2 percent.

Wilson County, while not listed among counties with the highest obesity rates in the state, does have its problems.

TN Outdoor Classroom Symposium to come to Lebanon

Some 300 participants are expected to attend the Tennessee Outdoor Classroom Symposium to be held at the James E. Ward Agricultural Center in Lebanon in May.

Teachers, principals, school system directors, college officials, PTO members and others are set to attend the symposium which is sponsored by the Tennessee Environmental Education Association, the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation, Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency and the Ward Center/Wilson County Fairgrounds with support from the Tennessee Department of Education and Tennessee State Parks, said Vicki Shelton, a first grade teacher at Southside Elementary School.
