From Post staff reportsA Wilson County grand jury declined to indict two officers on criminal charges in the shooting death of a man in April.Lebanon Police Officers Dave McKinley and Mitch McDannald were placed on leave since the incident occurred in April. Greg Thompson Jr., 22, was shot and killed in the incident in which the officers mistakenly believed he was shooting at one of them.The officers chasing Thompson after he nearly struck the patrol car of McKinley. Thompson took off down Carthage Highway and left the roadway, crashing his vehicle. McKinley followed him and got out of his car after Thompson’s went down an embankment. However, McKinley, who had drawn his gun, slipped and his gun fired.McDannald, who had joined in the chase, stayed on the roadway to cover McKinley. However, McDannald saw the gun fire and mistakenly believed that Thompson had fired the shot. McDannald then shot and killed and Thompson.“It was just a tragic accident,” said Lebanon Police Chief Scott Bowen after the incident occurred. “Our hearts and prayers go out to Mr. Thompson’s family and to our officers and their families. It’s just terrible.”The officers are expected to return to active duty soon with the police department.
