Purvis returns as MJ baseball coach

An announcement was made Tuesday, July 15 naming Mark Purvis as head baseball coach at Mt. Juliet High.
Purvis, who was the coach of the Golden Bears for 13 seasons prior to stepping down in June of 2012, will take over for the man who replaced him -- Jim Carter.
Carter went 51-20-2 at Mt. Juliet. He resigned back on June 12 in order to take over the program at Class A power Goodpasture in Madison.
His first team at Mt. Juliet (2013) went 26-12, winning both the District 9AAA and Region 5AAA tournament titles, before falling in the Class AAA sectionals.
Carter's 2014 unit went 25-8-2 and did not advance out of the district tournament.
Purvis, a 1989 graduate of Mt. Juliet and a four-year starter at second base for Cumberland University, remained as a faculty member at MJHS for the past two seasons and had been in charge of maintaining both the football game and practice fields.
Purvis went 395-139 as head coach at Mt. Juliet, a winning percentage of .739, taking the District 9AAA championship in each of his last seven seasons.
His last team -- the 2012 squad -- went 38-6, setting a new school record for most victories in a season, and won the Region 5AAA tournament for a fourth year in a row.
Six times, including 2012, he guided the Golden Bears to the TSSAA State Tournament, including a runner-up finish in 2009 and a final four berth in 2010.
Some 70 of his former players signed college scholarships and two of his former players are currrently pitching in professional baseball.
Prior to taking the head coaching job at MJ he assisted former Golden Bear head coach Gary McFarlin for three years and for three years coached under Woody Hunt at Cumberland.
