LEBANON -- Cumberland football coach Dewayne Alexander announced the hiring of Jake Roberts as an assistant coach for the 2009 season.  Roberts has served the last two seasons as a graduate assistant for the Bulldogs and takes the place of Wayne Dabbs, who left the program after last season.

Roberts served as the tight ends coach last season at Cumberland and was an assistant running backs coach in 2007. He was also the specialist coach for kickers, punters, snappers and holders and served as the assistant special teams coach.

He helped with strength and conditioning, field maintenance and recruiting and was also the team’s video coordinator. Roberts helped mentor CU punter Michael Hinson, who earned Victory Sports Network Second Team All-American honors in 2008, leading the nation in punting.

Hinson was also a First Team All-Mid-South Conference West Division punter last season, as well as Mitch Reynolds, a Second Team All-West Division pick at tight end.

He served as an assistant defensive backs coach at Cass High School in Cartersville, Ga., during the 2006-07 school year, a Class 3A school in Georgia. The Colonels made the state playoffs during his season at CHS.

Roberts lettered four years at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tenn., kicking the second longest field goal, 47 yards, in program history in 2003 versus Washington & Lee.

The Phenix City, Ala., native attended Central High School in Phenix City, earning First Team All-East Alabama honors as a sophomore and junior and Second Team All-Bi City accolades from the Columbus (GA) Ledger-Enquirer as a sophomore.

Roberts earned his bachelor’s in Russian with a minor in History in 2006 from the University of the South and earned a master’s in Arts in Education from Cumberland this past May.
