More than 4,000 runners and walkers descended on Lebanon Saturday morning for the 12th annual Sherry's Run, ultimately raising more than $300,000 for the local non-profit that seeks to help those in the community whose lives have been upended by cancer.

"We are told to bear one another's burdens, and that is exactly what this event is about today. We are here to bear one another's burdens," Kevin Medlin, pastor of Cumberland Presbyterian Church told the crowd gathered at Saturday's event. "We are here to tell those we love that they do not stand alone. We are here to stand with them, to fight with them."

According to event organizers, support was not only in spirit and attendance but also in generosity. Thus far, more than $310,000 has been given. That money will help families affected by any kind of cancer who live or seek treatment in Wilson County or the surrounding communities and are actively pursuing treatment and demonstrate a true financial need.

In 2014, donations to Sherry's Run allowed the organization to help patients and their families in a variety of ways:

  • $100,410 in utility bills paid

  • $30,986 in housing payments paid

  • $49,174 in medical bills and prescriptions paid

  • $74,850 in gas and grocery cards provided

"I am so moved by the passion this community shows each year for our patients," Sherry's Run Board Chair and Director of Patient Assistance Tonyia Watson said. "Each person that participates makes a difference in the lives of the people I see in my office every week."

The 116 teams that participated in Saturday's event brought plenty of excitement and morale. The following teams received awards:

  • Most participants on a team - Whit's Warriors, with 478 team members; team captain: Whit Robertson

  • Most money raised (over entry fees) - Maple Hill church of Christ for Whit's Warriors raised $16,127; team captain: Gabbi Parrish

  • Most team spirit - Lt. Bob's Squad; team captain: Wendy Street

  • Team T-shirt competition - IMA CrossFit; team captain: Dustin Roberson

Event organizers also expressed their appreciation for the more than 500 volunteers who worked to make the event successful as well as those who contributed via the "Paint Your Town Green" campaign. Mike Johnson, who has been a Sherry's Run board member and committee chair of the event setup crew for many years, was awarded the 2015 Sherry's Run Volunteer of the Year award.

Of the more than 4,000 who took part in the 5K run/walk, more than 500 were chip-timed runners. Congratulations to the race winners:
