Spray to UTM; Eakes to UNA
GLADEVILLE -- Two Wilson Central senior athletes signed NCAA National Letters of Intent Wednesday to continue their careers at the college level.
Basketball player Kendall Spray signed with the University of Tennessee at Martin and slugging softball player Katie Eakes signed with the University of North Alabama. Both signed their paperwork in the school gym in front of dozens of friends and family members.
Last year's District 9-AAA Most Valuable Player, Spray was named All-State by the Tennessee Sportswriters Association following a prolific 2014-2015 campaign.
As a junior, Spray averaged 21.2 points per game -- helping the Lady Wildcats to a 25-8 record and a semifinal berth in the Region 5-AAA tournament.
She established a TSSAA record for most 3-pointers made in a season -- 139. Back on January 30 against Station Camp, Spray tied a TSSAA record for consecutive 3-pointers in a game with eight - finishing with with 39 points.
"I met some great girls on the team during my visit," Spray said, "I really like the coaching staff and the campus - it made me feel at home."
In addition to UTM, Spray was recruited by Trevecca Nazarene, Morehead State, Austin Peay and Tennessee Tech.
Eakes is coming off a tremendous junior year that found her hitting .562 with 73 hits, 60 RBI, 23 doubles and four homers. She struck out just eight times in 150 plate appearances as Wilson Central won the Class AAA state tournament with a record of 41-7-1.
Through her three-year varsity career, Eakes has driven in 119 runs, with 56 doubles and nine homers.
"UNA is a great school and they have a successful softball program," Eakes said. "The campus is pretty, I love the coach and there's a real family atmosphere."
Eakes will join former Wilson Central teammates Shelby Woodard (catcher) and Hannah Bodenhorn (pitcher) at UNA in the fall of 2016.
