LEBANON -- Funeral services have been scheduled for 12 Noon Saturday, Nov. 19 at the JC Hellum Funeral Home for Ms. Stroud, 89. Known as "Sister" Stroud to her many friends, she died Nov. 11, 2011 at Summit Medical Center.
Considered a trailblazer in the Mt. Juliet Africian American community, Ms. Stroud purchased a bus in the 1940s and began driving the vehicle herself in 1946 -- transporting area children to school.
The Wilson County Board of Education assigned her to drive a county bus in the 1960s. By all accounts, she was the first African American female bus driver in Wilson County.
The family will receive friends Saturday from 11 a.m. until the service.
Rev. Stanley Southall will be the eulogist. Interment will follow in Mt. Juliet's Rutland Cemetery.
Survivors include: daughters Bobbie Majors, Tiffany (George) Dalton and Ontario Stroud; as well as a host of other relatives and friends.
Arrangements by JC Hellum Funeral Home, Lebanon.
