Wilson Central falls in 5-AAA opener
CLARKSVILLE -- A new Class AAA state softball champion will be crowned in Murfreesboro next week as defending champ Wilson Central was eliminated 12-3 by Clarksville High Monday in the opening round of the Region 5-AAA tournament.
Clarksville pounded out 12 hits, improving to 34-7-1 and earning the right to host the Region 5-AAA finals tonight against District 9-AAA champion Hendersonville.
CHS started with a bang, scoring three times in the bottom of the first, highlighted by a two-run double from Peyton Wilson and an RBI single by Macey Milliken.
Wilson Central (26-13) cut the lead to one in the top of the third on a two-run single by Katie Eakes, but Clarksville bounced back in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI single from Taylor Adkins to push the lead to 4-2.
The score remained that way until the top of the fifth inning when Wilson Central's Laney Tucker picked up an RBI single to make it a one-run game again, 4-3.
Wilson Central got no closer as CHS exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the inning to break the game open. Clarksville's Mckenzie Rose drilled a two-run homer and later in the frame Wilson added a booming three-run homer to right-center.
Tucker went 3-for-4 with an RBI for Wilson Central while Claire Smith added two singles and scored a run.
Kaylee Richetto took the loss for Central, allowing 11 earned runs on 12 hits. She struck out five and walked one.
Wilson Central dropped a 6-3 loss to Hendersonville in Saturday's finals District 9-AAA finals at Vol State.
WCHS earned a regional berth with a 6-3 victory over Beech.
