WCHS & FCS play in Alabama --
MT. JULIET -- Savannah Sanders struck out 12 batters, but her Mt. Juliet High teammates were held to just two hits against Siegel's Veronica Westfall in Wednesday afternoon's 3-0 loss to the Stars.
Siegel (2-0) pushed across two runs in the top of the first inning and added a solo run in the third.
All told, the Stars rapped out eight hits against Sanders while Westfall was striking out 13 Mt. Juliet hitters.
Second baseman Desiree Kasper and third baseman Kristen Hammer had the only hits for the Lady Bears.
Weather permitting, Mt. Juliet (0-1) will participate this weekend in the Commando Classic at Hendersonville's Drakes Creek Park.
Wilson Central opens 5-1
GULF SHORES, Ala. -- Wilson Central's softball team opened the 2015 season with a 5-1 run at the Golf Coast Nike Classic earlier this week at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex.
The Lady Wildcats placed third in their division of the massive tournament, after having competed against teams from Mississippi.
Wilson Central started the tournament Monday with a 2-0 victory over eventual tournament champion Madison Central.
Later in the day WCHS rolled to a 5-0 victory over Parklane Academy.
The Lady Wildcats blanked Clinton 6-0 Tuesday before finishing pool play with a 2-0 win over Southaven.
Seeded No. 1 headed into the elimination round, Wilson Central defeated Parklane 6-2 before falling to Madison Central 5-3 in the semifinals.
Junior Katie Eakes went 9-for-13 in the tournament with 10 runs batted in while Brooke Pfefferle was 7-for-11 at the plate. Claire Smith and Shelby Woodard each had five hits.
Morgan Powell (3-0) and Hannah Bodenhorn (2-1) handled the pitching chores, as neither gave up a run until the fifth game of the tournament.
Coach Michael Shepard's club will be in action Monday, March 16 as they host District 9-AAA rival Gallatin in a 5 p.m.
Pregame ceremonies to celebrate the recently completed renovations at the field will begin at 4:30 p.m.
Friendship places 3rd in CSC
GULF SHORES, Ala. -- Friendship Christian's Lady Commanders placed third in their division of the Gulf Coast Nike Classic held earlier this week at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex.
FCS went undefeated through pool play, opening Monday with wins over Brandon, MS (4-1) and Natchez Cathedral (10-0).
Tana Whited blanked host Gulf Shores 6-0 Tuesday on a two-hitter as Brooke Eakes and Courtney Miles each had two hits.
Also on Tuesday, FCS topped Lewisburg High (Tennessee) 5-4 as Courtney Petty worked around a wild streak to earn the decision.
Petty only allowed one hit as Jordan Burton and Whited each ripped doubles.
In Wednesday's elimination-round, Kelsi Dickey drove in three runs on three hits as the Lady Commanders blasted Ben Russell High (Ala.) 13-4 in the quarterfinals.
Eakes added three hits while Petty and Miles each drove in two runs.
Later Wednesday, FCS was eliminated in the semifinals 9-3 by Brandon (Miss.).
Brandon scored four unearned runs off Whited in the top of the first inning as the Lady Commander bats only produced three hits.
Friendship Christian will be back in action Thursday, March 19 as Ezell-Harding comes to town for a 6 p.m. East-Middle District 1-A contest.
Lebanon High's softball team is scheduled to play in the Commando Classic today at Drakes Creek Park.
The Lady Devils will take on Huntsville, Ala. today at 1 p.m. followed by a 2:30 p.m. contest vs. Goodpasture Christian School of Madison.
Pool play should be completed Saturday at 9:30 a.m. vs. Greenbrier.
