Region 5-AAA title at stake
Late game dramatics have become routine for Wilson Central's softball team.
The Lady Wildcats broke a few hearts Monday with a thrilling 2-1 win over visiting Clarksville High in the Region 5-AAA semifinal.
Senior Shelby Woodard clocked a walk-off solo homer to open the seventh inning -- moving Coach Michael Shepard's squad to 37-7-1 on the season -- setting up tonight's regional title game vs. longtime rival Mt. Juliet.
Game time is set for 6 p.m. in Gladeville.
Regardless of tonight's outcome, both teams will move on to Friday's Class AAA sectional with the winner playing at home and the loser hitting the road.
Central's Hannah Bodenhorn scattered six hits to pace the Lady Wildcats, striking out 11.
Katie Eakes went two-for-three and threw a Clarksville runner out at third in the top of the seventh and centerfielder Lily Bombard threw out the potential go-ahead run at the plate for the third out of the inning.
WC clinches 9-AAA championship
GLADEVILLE -- Wilson Central locked up a third consecutive District 9-AAA tournament title with a 2- victory over Mt. Juliet Friday, May 8.
Katie Eakes drilled a two-run single in the top of the seventh, scoring Brooke Pfefferle and Claire Smith -- breaking up a scoreless pitching duel between Morgan Powell (19-0) and Mt. Juliet ninth grader Kyli Biggs.
Smith, Kayla Varner, Pfeffeerle, Bombard and Powell were named to the all-tournament team from Wilson Central.
MJ 11, Henry County 0
PARIS -- Mt. Juliet's Lady Bears pounded out 17 hits, scoring six times in the fourth and tacking on five runs in the top of the seventh to complete a lopsided 11-0 victory over Henry County High in Monday night's Region 5-AAA semifinal game.
Thanks to Monday's win, Mt. Juliet improved to 25-10 and will play Wilson Central tonight (Wednesday) for the region championship.
First pitch is set for 6 p.m. with both teams moving on to play in a Class AAA sectional game Friday evening.
Starting pitcher Savannah Sanders didn't need much help -- throwing a complete game three-hitter and striking out 14.
Hanna Sheppard, Tyffany Cargile and Sanders had three hits each while Cargile drove in five runs.
Taylor Fletcher, Stephanie Felts and Desiree Kasper each had two hits for the winners
All-district: Sanders, Sheppard and Kristen Hammer were named to the District 9-AAA all-tournament team.
