Rodrigues honored by MSC Tennis PDF Print E-mail

Cumberland’s Pedro Rodrigues was voted Mid-South Conference Tennis Player of the Week on Tuesday after posting a 7-1 record in singles and doubles during four matches for the Bulldogs from March 4-10.

The Batalha, Portugal, junior, helped CU to team wins over NCAA Division II North Alabama as well as 17th-ranked Graceland University and 15th-ranked Campbellsville University. CU’s only defeat for the week was a 5-4 decision to No. 10 Xavier [LA] University.

Rodrigues defeated North Alabama’s Matt Feury, Graceland’s 25th-ranked Raul Mendez and Campbellsville’s Michael Rjazanov in straight sets and lost to Xavier’s Loic Didavi, all at No. 1 singles. In doubles Rodrigues and Antonio Manuel Marcelo won all four outings, including an 8-4 decision against Graceland’s eighth-ranked Mendez and Juan Jose Mateus The weekly conference award is Rodrigues’ first of the season and of his career.

Cumberland takes on Tennessee Wesleyan at home on Friday at 2 p.m. before hitting the road again for outings at the University of Pikeville and UVA-Wise on Monday and Tuesday next week.
