CU men fall at Bethel 87-55 PDF Print E-mail

McKENZIE -- Cumberland could not keep Bethel University contained on the boards, giving up 68 rebounds to the Wildcats, and CU managed only 16 field goals in an 87-55 losing effort at the Crisp Center Monday night.

The sixteen buckets by the Bulldogs were a season low, as was their 24 percent shooting from the floor. Charles Stewart was the only CU player to score in double digits, finishing with 11. Elijah Gillis added eight points and a team-high six rebounds.

PURPLE TIGERS NOW 21-3 OVERALL
WATERTOWN -- Five Purple Tigers scored in double figures as No. 7 Watertown rolled to an easy 85-45 victory over rival Friendship Christian Friday night. Coach Matt Bradshaw's team improved to 21-3 on the season and stands a perfect 6-0 in District 8A play with the lopsided win.

Ethan Moss was on fire for Watertown, drilling five 3-pointers to lead all scorers with 17 points. Josiah Smith and Macieo Gaines added 15 each, George Theragood had 12 and Ty Jobe 11.

FCS fell to 6-13 overall and 3-5 in District 8A.

Post Deja Jones took control with 30 points as Friendship Christian defeated Watertown 65-47 in Friday night's opener. Trailing 12-11 at the end of the first quarter, FCS went on an 18-5 second quarter lead and took a 29-17 lead into intermission.

The Lady Commanders upped their record to 15-6 overall, 6-2 in District 8A. Watertown slumped to 12-13 overall with the loss.

STATE DUALS: Cleveland smokes Wilson Central 78-4 in finals PDF Print E-mail

FRANKLIN -- Wilson Central ran into a buzzsaw in Saturday night's Class AAA State Duals finals -- falling to powerful Cleveland 78-4 at the Williamson County Expo Center.

Cleveland recorded a mind-boggling 13 pins out of the 14 weight classes with WCHS soph John Kramer pulling out the lone win for the Wildcats --  a 14-2 major decision over John Gaither in the 220-pound class.

In the four meets Cleveland wrestled at the state duals, the Blue Raiders lost only four matches not conceded by forfeit.

Wilson Central finished the dual season 41-3 overall while Cleveland wrapped up the dual season 28-2.

Community leaders have estimated Wednesday morning’s EF-2 tornado caused a minimum of $200,000 damage to Mt. Juliet’s seemingly jinxed baseball / softball complex on Lebanon Road. The 13-field complex, called home by well over 100 youth teams, was all but destroyed by flood waters in May of 2010, only to bounce back bigger and stronger after a groundswell of community support.

Huge AAU wrestling tourney set Feb. 9 PDF Print E-mail

Over 500 youth wrestlers and their families will converge on Lebanon Saturday, Feb. 9 as the Blue Devil Wrestling Club will stage its second annual “A TeamTN” Tournament.

Sanctioned by the AAU, eight mats will be in use at a vacant warehouse located at 800 Maddox Simpson Parkway. Wrestlers will compete in six divisions according to age from middle school on down. 

“Cumberland University’s wrestling program has stepped up and will be manning all our tables and helping us with scoring and check-ins,” said tournament organizer Jeff Clemmons. “This would not come together without the help of Ron Pavin, Todd Allen and Marcus Cobbs.”
