WCHS & FCS open play Tuesday
The Wilson Central and Friendship Christian softball teams stormed into Tuesday's opening round of the 22nd annual TSSAA Spring Fling with convincing wins in their respective sectional games.
The Lady Wildcats moved to 37-7-1 with a 9-2 decision over Ravenwood Friday, May 15.
Central ripped 14 hits including a three-run triple in the fourth inning by Morgan Powell. Katie Eakes, Powell and Brooke Pfefferle had three hits apiece.
FCS improved to 33-8 with a 13-1 victory at University School of Jackson Friday -- taking the three game series 2-1.
Newly-eligible transfer Riley Walker whacked a pair of homers -- driving in four runs -- to support the one-hit pitching of Courtney Petty. Walker slugged four home runs in the three game series.
WCHS will open the Class AAA state tournament 5:30 p.m. Tuesday by taking on Collierville (29-5).
A win Tuesday would send WCHS into a second round game 11:30 a.m. Wednesday against either Siegel or Hardin Valley.
A first round loss would send Coach Michael Shepard's team into a 10 a.m. game Wednesday.
Friendship's Division II tournament consists of just four teams -- meaning the Lady Commanders are only three games from a title.
Coach Jody Atwood's team is scheduled to play Davidson Academy (29-10-1) in Tuesday afternoon's 4 p.m. opening game.
A win Tuesday would send FCS into Thursday morning's semifinals against either Ezell-Harding (25-12) of The King's Academy (30-12).
Should the Lady Commanders fall on Tuesday, a loser-out game would be played Wednesday at 4 p.m.
Tournament finals are scheduled for Friday morning.
All Spring Fling softball games are being contested at the StarPlex / McKnight Complex in Murfreesboro.
Mt. Juliet (27-12) ended the 2015 season with a 5-0 loss at defending state champ Dickson County.
