Take time to remember those who have served

By SAM HATCHERMemorial Day is the day that has been designated to recognize, commemorate and praise the literally thousands of men and women who have died for our country while serving and wearing the uniform of the American military.Originally known as Decoration Day, this special day of recognition was established shortly after the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971.As we celebrate this day of honor on Monday, we must surely not fail to also recognize those who are serving our country today. Many are in foreign fields and battling for their lives as this newspaper is being read. Some will likely lose their lives if not today, perhaps tomorrow or in the very near future. Those who have served in our military in former years and have given their lives well deserve this day of honor. And those who serve today are equally deserving of our prayers and thoughts for their safety, protection and comfort. While you celebrate this holiday weekend, traditionally recognized as the beginning of summer, please take the time to remind yourself, your family and your friends about the sacrifices that were made by many for all of us.We hope you have a safe and fun filled holiday weekend.
