A female teen died of an apparent drowning on Memorial Day at Cedar Creek Recreational Area on Old Hickory Lake in Mt. Juliet.
According to Wilson County Sheriff's Office Lt. Scott Moore, the incident happened around 4 p.m. Monday. He said Monday late afternoon several people approached a WCSO deputy who was patrolling the area because of the holiday and reported to him a woman went under the water and never resurfaced. Moore said the deputy immediately called the Wilson County Emergency Management Agency for assistance and they searched the area.
The victim, 17, was located and was unconscious and CPR was administered and the victim transported to a local hospital where she died.
A subsequent investigation into the apparent drowning with interviews with witnesses revealed the victim apparently was with someone sitting on top of a buoy in the swim area when a large wave knocked her off and she never resurfaced. Moore said it was a very crowded area with lots of boats and was not sure if the wave was caused from a boat wake. He said other possibilities were the victim was not a strong swimmer or maybe had a cramp.
Cedar Creek Rec Area is located at the end of Saundersville Road and situated next to a popular campground. It is a popular summer time destination for families and children. Moore did not release the victim's name.
