To the Editor:
I've been listening to and reading about the debate over term limits. If the measure sponsored by Ward 5 Lebanon City Councilor Haywood Barry passes, I feel like I will have lost another freedom that I now have -- the right to vote for the candidate of my choice.
I vote to keep people in office who I think are doing a good job. I vote to put people out of office when I feel they no longer have our best interests at heart. Elected officials need time to learn how the government works. Experience in public office is a valuable asset -- seasoned office holders can bring valuable experience to the table. Look at the issues facing the Council this past year during the budget. They had problems from previous years that culminated in this budget. Their knowledge of what had happened in previous budgets helped them make informed decisions. No, I didn't agree with all of them; however, I had faith in the people who made these decisions.
Doesn't an election already serve as a type of term limit? If I have a good council person representing me, and I feel as if he's doing a good job, do I want to see him go home, or do I want to keep him in office working for me?
