Local players, coaches recognized
Several Wilson County softball standouts and two coaches were honored earlier this week by the Tennessee Softball Coaches Association. TSCA announced all-state selections in four divisions as well as all-star game rosters and Miss Softball Awards on Wednesday.
Four locals from District 9-AAA were named to the Class AAA all-state team, including Morgan Powell, Hannah Bodenhorn and Claire Smith from state champion Wilson Central and Mt. Juliet High's Savannah Sanders.
Courtney Petty and Tana Whited from DII-A state champion Friendship Christian School were named to the Division II all-state team.
Powell was a perfect 21-0 as a pitcher with 133 strikeouts. She hit .404 with six homers and 50 RBI; Bodenhorn went 20-7 in 2015 with and ERA of 2.01. She recorded 165 strikieeouts in 145 innings. ; Smith hit .449 from the leadoff spot with 66 hits and 59 runs scored.
Sanders, an Iowa State signee, is a repeat TSCA all-stater who went 20-3 with an ERA of 0.93. She struck out 323 batters in 176 innings of work.
Petty went 20-3 in the circle with an ERA of 1.65. She batted .432 with 51 runs scored.
Whited hit .446 with nine homers and 45 RBI while splitting time as a shortstop and pitcher.
FCS junior catcher Courtney Miles is a finalist for Division II Miss Softball.
Miles hit .537 with 10 home runs and 55 RBI. She was voted the Division II-A East-Middle District MVP.
The Miss Softball selection will be made Monday, June 15 at the annual TSCA All-Star Games at Columbia State Community College.
Wilson Central's Mike Shepard and Friendship's Jody Atwood will join DeKalb County's Danny Bond on the Middle Tennessee coaching staff.
