Two people were shot late Wednesday night in an attempted robbery of a convenience store on North Castle Heights Avenue Lebanon.
The incident occurred about 11:30 p.m., Wednesday, said Lebanon Police Chief Scott Bowen at the Zips convenience store.
The clerk had closed for the night and was in his car ready to leave when three black males approached his vehicle and demanded money. One of the suspects, Bowen said, produced a handgun.
The clerk was shot, the police chief said, and "then fought with the suspect, took the handgun and returned fire striking one of the suspects."
The other two suspects fled the scene.
The clerk was transported by Wilson County Emergency Management Agency ambulance to University Medical Center for treatment of non life-threatening injuries.
The suspect, whose injuries were more serious, was taken by LifeFlight helicopter to Vanderbilt Medical Center for treatment.
"Detectives are still working on the initial stage of investigation," Bowen said and hoped to be able to talk to the clerk about what happened.
