10:00 a.m. Animal Track Casting

Meet at the Nature Center to learn about and make plaster casts of tracks from some of the local park animals.

2:00 p.m. Mystery Guest by the Pool

Meet by the pool picnic tables to see what surprise creature the Nature Center Staff has brought for viewing.

Monday, August 6th

10:00 a.m. Raptors

Come to the nature center and meet our screech owl and kestrel. Learn some interesting facts about how they live and what they do to survive.

Tuesday, August 7th

10:00 a.m. How to Pack a Backpack

Come to the nature center and find out what you need to pack in your backpack for a trip

Wednesday, August 8th

3:00 p.m. Movie

Meet at the Nature Center and gather in the theater room to watch a movie about bugs up-close.

Thursday, August 9th

2:00 p.m. Happy Hive Bee Colony

Come to the Nature Center and pay a visit to our very own honey bee hive. Learn about the secret lives of bees and come put on a bee keeper suit.

Friday, August 10th

6:00 p.m. Evening Hike (Qualifies for Move Across Wilson Program)

Meet at the Nature Center where we will depart on a 1/2-mile hike. Be sure to bring good shoes and wear bug spray.

8:00 p.m. Friday Night Wagonride

Long Hunter State Park

Insects on the Trail Thursday August 2nd at 10am

Enjoy a leisurely walk through the Deer Trail looking at the Blazing Stars and other wildflowers that can be found in late summer. We will look for different species of insects and discuss their roles in the eco-system. Meet in Area 1.

Afternoon Hike: Nature Loop Trail Thursday August 2nd at 4pm

The Nature Loop is a short and wonderful trail for beginning hikers and children. Enjoy a small Cedar Glade and hardwood forest habitat. Meet in Area 2 by the trailhead. Call the park office for directions at 615-885-2422.

Explore the Cedar Glades Friday August 3rd at 7am

Start your day off with a short walk on the Tyler Sykes trail to enjoy the parks signature cedar glade habitat and watch for wildlife. Meet at the trailhead on South Mount Juliet Rd. Call the park office at (615) 885-2422 for directions.

Experience the Inland Trail Friday August 3rd at 6pm

The Inland Trail is an example of old-growth hardwood forest. There are many species of wildlife commonly spotted here. Join us for an evening walk to look at different layers of the forest canopy. Meet at the trailhead in Area 4.

Volunteer Trail Clean Up Saturday August 4th at 10am

Join park staff for a trail clean up on a portion of the Volunteer Trail. Plan on walking roughly 3 miles. Please bring gloves and water. Trash bags will be provided. Ages 10 and up.

Techniques of Fire Starting Sunday August 5th at 4pm

There are many different ways to start a fire while you are out in the woods. Come see and experience some of these methods. Meet in Area 1.

Afternoon Canoe Float Wednesday August 8th at 4pm

Spend an afternoon enjoying the beauty and serenity of Couchville Lake. Meet at the boat house in Area 2. Call the park office for reservations beginning August 2nd at (615) 885-2422. Ages 6 and above.

Water Bath Canning Class Thursday August 9th at 6pm

Canning is an art of food preservation that was common place to many of the families here in Middle Tennessee, but it is being lost as more families move off the farm. Come learn some tricks of this timely tradition. Call (615) 885-2422 to register. Ages 10 and up.

Childrens Outdoor Exploration Friday August 10th at 10am

Take the opportunity to allow your little ones to explore outdoors. Well be looking in the grass for insects and other natural components of the forest. We will talk about how the different elements

Mountain Bike Trail Hike Friday August 10th at 5:30pm

Long Hunters only bike accessible trail is also a great trail for hikers. It offers a wide variety of habitats and some exceptional views of Percy Priest Lake. This trail is four miles long so pack water, sunscreen, and bug spray. Meet at Jones Mill Mountain Bike Trail parking lot on Barnett Rd. Please call the park office for directions at (615) 885-2422.

Explore the Sellars Farm Saturday August 11th at 10am,

Take a walk back in time at Sellars Farm State Archaeological Area. Mississippian period Native American culture will be discussed. Ages 6 and above. Meet at the Sellars Farm site. Please call the park office for directions at (615) 885-2422.

Tree ID on the Inland Trail Saturday August 11th at 3pm

Come enjoy a pleasant trail covered with Upland Hardwood Forest. Well discuss features unique to these trees and ways to identify specific species. Meet at the trailhead in Area 4.

Insect Collection and Preservation 101 Sunday August 12th at 3:30pm

Do insects fascinate you? Are you looking for a new hobby? Join Ranger Kathryn as she demonstrates methods of insect collection and preservation. Meet in the park office in Area 1. Come prepared to try to catch some insects for observation.

Backpacking for Beginners Wednesday August 15th at 4pm

Join rangers for a talk on some different kinds of available gear. The main focus will be on the "10 Essentials" for Tennessee. Meet in the park office in Area 1.

Evening Canoe Float Thursday August 16th at 6:30pm

Spend a Thursday evening enjoying the beauty and serenity of Couchville Lake. Meet at the boat house in Area 2. Reservations can be made by calling the park office beginning on July 12th (615-885-2422). Ages 6 and above.

Afternoon Hike: Day Loop Trail Friday August 17th at 5:30pm

Enjoy a medium-level hike on a Friday afternoon. We will get to walk across some bluffs and get a great view of different types of habitat here at Long Hunter. Experienced hikers only. Please bring a light daypack and come prepared for a couple hours of fun!

Couchville Glade Sunset Stroll Saturday August 25th at 6pm

Join Robin Wooten (Tennessee Natural Areas Program) and naturalist Jason Allen for an easy one-mile walk through the cedar glades, which are known for their rare plants and unique wildlife. This will not be a fast-paced hike; there will be frequent stops for interpretation and photo opportunities. Reservations are required for this particular event. 9th Annual Lost Loon Triathlon Sunday August 26th at 9am

The Lost Loon Triathlon has become an annual tradition at Long Hunter State Park. The event, which takes place in and around Couchville Lake, features nine miles of biking, two miles of canoeing, and four miles of running/walking. For more info, please visit

Meet at the Nature Center where we will depart on a 20-30 minute ride through the fields of the park. See if you can spot the creatures of the night before they spot you.
