Veterans Plaza taking shape

Wilson County Veterans Plaza is on track for its grand opening on Memorial Day, May 26.

Veterans Service Officer Bernie Ash told The Wilson Post on Thursday that flagpoles were going up and that the main star-shaped fountain and bench seating would be ready for visitors at the county’s annual Memorial Day celebration. The Veterans Plaza is located next to Wilson County Courthouse on East Main Street in Lebanon.

“The whole thing should be done except for a few monuments. They had to be ordered and have taken longer than expected,” he said.

Ash said the project, which began with fundraising more than two years ago, has come this far thanks to generous monetary and construction donations. “Phoenix Contractors are doing the construction. We have had a lot of donors give us material and I’d like to point out that Chip Vanatta has done the masonry work for free,” he explained. “I ran into him at Rose Tire one day and he offered his help and has absolutely followed through with it.”

Ash said additional corporate sponsorship opportunities are available for those looking to contribute to the next phase of the project – the Veterans Museum, which would house the Veterans Service Office.

“We would like to encourage corporate sponsors to get in touch with us. Silver sponsorships are available for $2,500, Gold for $5,000 and Platinum for $10,000 and up,” he said.

“We are making progress.”
