GALLATIN – The Wilson Central girl’s soccer team accomplished something it hadn’t for over three years with the 1-0 win over Portland in the quarterfinals of the District 9AAA Tournament Saturday. The Lady Wildcats celebration was short lived however, because their second round opponent was regular season district champion, the Lady Commandos from Hendersonville, who are undefeated in the district.
Hendersonville showed why it was the top seed in the tournament as the Lady Commandos got their second shutout in a row with a 3-0 win over Wilson Central Monday, ending the Lady Wildcats season.
“We knew we had to come out and play at a high level tonight because Hendersonville is such a good team,” said Wilson Central Coach Ashley Orzechowski. “I thought we played well, and I’m just proud of the girls for getting past the first round because that hasn’t happened around here in a while.”
Central (5-8-1) goalkeeper, Jessica Estes, was under constant pressure Monday night as the Lady Commandos had 24 shots on goal, 21 of those turned away by Estes.
Hendersonville (11-7-2) got on the board in the first three minutes of the game when Haley Foutch knocked a shot home from over 18 yards out, and then Samantha Hogan crossed it to Caitlin Chandler who put it in to put the Lady Commandos up 2-0 with 31:42 left in the first half.
Wilson Central held HHS scoreless for the remainder of the first half, and 25 minutes in the second half until Hogan had her second assist of the night, this time to Megan Gold to account for all the Lady Commando scoring.
