All-state softball player from WCHS --
Wilson Central softball standout Morgan Powell has verbally committed to Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville. A member of the WCHS graduating Class of 2015, she will enroll at NCAA Division II Trevecca this fall.
Powell helped lead the Lady Wildcats to a record of 41-7-1 overall and the Class AAA state championship earlier this year in Murfreesboro as a pitcher / hitter.
Selected all-state by the Tennessee Sports Writers Association, Powell went 21-0 as a pitcher with an ERA of 1.63 with 133 strikeouts this past season.
As a hitter, she batted .404 with 13 doubles, six home runs, 50 runs batted in and 40 runs scored.
"I'm very excited to see Morgan continue her softball career," said WCHS head coach Michael Shepard. "(TNU) Coach (Ben) Tyree is a great guy and has been in contact with Morgan a lot over the past few years. Trevecca is getting a player who have been a huge piece to our success these past four years."
Prior to the 2015 softball season unfolding, Powell was not planning on playing at the collegiate level and was looking forward to attending the University of Tennessee-Knoxville.
Following her stellar senior season at Wilson Central and a solid summer playing with the Martin-based Tennessee Illusions 18U, she was presented with multiple scholarship offers from Community College, NAIA and NCAA programs.
"Since I was little girl, I wanted to go to UT," Powell said, "as the season went along we won the state tournament and I didn't want the season to end. I had some offers from community colleges and some smaller schools and then there was more interest as my summer season went along with the Illusions.
"Trevecca offered recently and they're really close to home. I'm excited to be going there."
At Trevecca, Powell will be joining Friendship Christian School all-stater Tana Whited, who helped lead the Lady Commanders to a Division II state title in 2015.
The Trevecca Nazarene softball team went 40-10 in 2015 season and advanced to the finals of the NCAA Division II Midwest Region Tournament.
Powell is undecided on a major.
