Wilson County property tax payments are ahead of where they were this time last year, and a local utility cooperative remains at the top of the list for property tax payments.
That was the word Thursday from Wilson County Trustee Jim Major who reported his office has collected 86 percent of total property taxes due.
“By the time we turn (the taxes) over to the Clerk and Master we will have collected over 99 percent,” he said.
At this time last year, Major noted, his office had collected about 82 percent of taxes due.
A large number of people turned out on Monday, March 1, to pay their 2009 county property taxes. The taxes normally are due on the last day of February, but Major said because Feb. 28 fell on a Sunday when the office is closed, he accepted tax payments on Monday without charging a penalty or interest.
“We had a big crowd on Monday, a lot more than we anticipated. But the ladies (who work in the office) did a super job of handling everyone.”
Major also released yesterday the top county property tax payers for 2009. They are as follows:
1. Middle Tennessee Electric Membership Corporation -- $1,058,8272. Nashville Superspeedway -- $936,8073. Bridgestone/Firestone -- $732,9414. HMA/University Medical Center -- $487,1425. Cracker Barrel -- $471,3846. Lochinvar -- $343,9297. Texas Eastern -- $318,3578. Nashville Auto Auction -- $265,2609. Piedmont Natural Gas -- $237,04410. Rockdale Distributing -- $232,528
