It was a little after 5 oclock and I was driving home from work. I am charged with the accident, of course, because I struck the guy in front of me, Jewell explained, adding that he is appreciative that the incident did not injure anyone involved.Jewell said that it was just a case of not being prepared to stop and being preoccupied on his cell phone. I dont really text, so texting and driving is not a temptation for me. I was on the phone talking to folks at the fairground about the weather, he said. The county insurance company is taking care of the claims. I am just glad there wasnt anybody hurt.County Mayor Randall Hutto was out of town when the accident occurred but said that it will be treated appropriately. That hasnt come up yet. We are still looking at it, he said.Hutto said that Jewell was involved in another accident in 2011 when, to the best of his recollection, Jewell backed into a vehicle.

He was stopped and a tractor trailer was pulling in and he backed up to make room for it. A car was in his blind spot and he backed into it, he said, adding that Jewell was suspended without pay for a period following the accident. To the best I remember, he took the same punishment as any other WEMA employee suspension without pay.

Jewell was not cited by THP in the June 26 accident.
