WHS sweeps into 8-A semifinals

Tigerettes assured of regional berth
GORDONSVILLE -- Watertown's volleyball team locked up a berth in next week's Region 4-A tournament by sweeping a pair of games Tuesday in the District 8-A tournament.

Coach Brandy Holcomb's squad (19-9 overall) is scheduled to play top-seeded Goodpasture 6 p.m. Thursday for the district title at Gordonsville High.

Tuesday, WHS blanked Merrol-Hyde 3-0 by scores of 25-9, 25-11 and 25-10.

Paige Mock had 10 kills, six digs and four aces while Brenna Luttrell added eight kills. Cayla Jacob chipped in with five kills and two digs; Bailey Griffin served five aces and had three digs

Tuesday's second game found Watertown sweeping host Gordonsville 3-0 by scores of 25-17, 25-22 and 25-20.

Mock had eight kills and 18 digs while Alaina Johnson finished with 17 digs, three kills and two aces.

Victori Foster had 14 digs; Allie Poston scored seven blocks and four kills; Emily Woodson had 14 digs and four aces.

Beech knocks off LHS
GLADEVILLE -- No. 2-seed Lebanon saw the 2015 season come to a close with a 3-1 loss to No. 3 Beech Tuesday night in the District 9-AAA semifinals at Wilson Central. Game scores: 21-25, 25-17, 12-25 and 24-26.

Beech moved on to play top-seeded Portland in Thursday's district finals. Both teams will advance to next week's Region 5-AAA tournament.

The Lady Devils ended the season 19-6 overall despite a double-double from Jasmine Fuqua who had 10 kills and 14 digs.

Briana Clemmons also had a double-double with 12 kills and 15 digs; Nicole Painter had 10 kills and two blocks while Zia Hamilton dished out 28 assists with 18 digs and two aces.

Erin Arnold finished with two aces and seven digs while Lily Baldwin had 11 digs.
