Lady Wildcats stand 29-2 overall
LEBANON -- Methodical Wilson Central took a 14-6 lead and never looked back, clinching a second consecutive District 9-AAA tournament championship Tuesday with a 39-26 victory over Mt. Juliet at Campbell Brandon Gymnasium.
With the win, the Lady Wildcats improved to 29-2 on the season and stretched their winning streak to nine straight headed into a Friday, Feb. 24 home game in the Region 5-AAA opener against the No. 4 team out of District 10-AAA.
Leading 11-6 in the closing seconds of the first quarter, Wilson Central got an unexpected gift when Taylor Tucker banked in a 40-footer just before the buzzer to stretch the margin to eight.
Coach John Wild's team went on a 14-8 second period run and took a 28-14 lead into intermission.
"We've been playing some great team defense here late in the season," Coach Wild said. "Tonight was another example. I thought we talked a lot on defense. We did a good job with pressure on the wings and that caused us to disturb their entry passes."
Ninth grader Lindsey Freeman paced the winners with 14 points while Addison Byrd added 10.
Mt. Juliet (16-12) was led by freshman post Emma Palmer who went 7-of-10 from the field and finished with 15 points. No other Lady Bear reached double figures.
Mt. Juliet will host the No. 3 seed from District 10-AAA Friday in a 7 p.m. satellite game of the Region 5-AAA tournament.
