Memorial Day is Monday, May 30.
The community is invited once again to join in a remembrance ceremony, sponsored by American Legion Post 15, the City of Lebanon and Wilson County, at the new Veterans Plaza in Lebanon.
Guests will be able to see the progress being made at the Veterans Plaza - as the office and museum portions are well underway - and hear the keynote speech by Cumberland University baseball coach Woody Hunt. Hunt, a former marine, this past season went over 1,500 career wins.
His CU teams have won three national championships and he is a member of several baseball halls of fame.
A native of Danville, Kentucky, Hunt enlisted in the Marines right out of high school. Cpl. Hunt served a two-year hitch including stops at Paris Island, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and the Mediterranean.
According to a release, Hunt learned techniques in the service which he now applies to his coaching method.
"My infantry training developed discipline, toughness, team work and a sense of sticking with a task," Hunt explained. "I also developed a sense of pride. There's not another organization in the world like the Marines that grows a feeling of becoming something special - belonging."
Hunt added, "I feel really unworthy to speak Monday because of my short time in the service, but I wouldn't take anything for my time in Marine Corps."
Event coordinator Colonel Jim D. Henderson (USAF ret.) said folks are encouraged to bring their family and friends to the ceremony to "demonstrate support and appreciation for those we owe so much."
The ceremony will be hosted by veterans' organizations in Wilson County, including American Legion Post 15, 179 and 281; VFW Post 5015; DAV; Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 1004 and Gold Star Mothers. It will feature patriotic music, posting of the colors, recognition of Gold Star Mothers and Blue Star Families and more.
The hour-long ceremony begins at 9 a.m. at the Veterans Plaza, adjacent to the Wilson County Courthouse, on East Main Street. Construction on the plaza is expected to be completed in the fall of 2016.
