Sign-ups for the Lebanon/Wilson Public Library Summer Reading Program begin Thursday, May 26.
Children's Librarian Nancy Fowler said signing up is as simple as showing up at the library on West Main Street in Lebanon and filling out your name and contact information. "Anyone can participate in our Summer Reading Program," she said, noting that programs are open to children, teens and adults - and you don't have to be a resident of Wilson County to enroll.
"It is reading just for fun," Fowler said of the longtime annual program. "For every five books they read they get to draw a prize out of the prize box. It can be bubble gum, a ball, a toy."
The children's program is one of the most popular. Last year, 1,787 kids signed up to participate. Kids are invited to events at the library each week and can earn Wilson County Fair Passes and more.
This year's program is called "On Your Mark, Get Set, Read" - and is open to children ages 0-6th grade. According to a release from the library, kids in Kindergarten thru 6th grade who read 20 books over the summer will receive a Fair Pass and armband to ride all of the rides.
"We are very excited because this year is the first year that Kindergarteners will be included in the fair pass," the release stated. "The kids birth to pre-K will receive a day pass to the Jimmy Floyd Family Center and a coupon from McDonalds for free ice cream or fries."
Each week, the Library also hosts live entertainment for kids. The first performance will be "Super Science" with shows at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Thursday, June 2. The following Tuesday, June 7, magician Bruce Amato will take the stage with shows at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Musical entertainer Kevin Kidd will be at the Library at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Thursday, June 9.
Other scheduled acts include the Nashville Zoo, June 14; Guardian Martial Arts, June 15; Safari Greg, June 16th; Balloon Magic with Scott Tripp, June 21; Nashville Sounds, June 30, Sports Village, July 6; and more.
