If contract negotiations go well this week, the Wilson County Board of Education will have a new Director of Schools to announce at their June 2 meeting.

The BOE heard presentations by director finalists Trousdale County Schools Director Clint Satterfield and Williamson County Schools Assistant Superintendent Dr. Donna Wright Saturday, May 3 before going into a special called meeting to select a top candidate.

The board selected Wright to be their final choice for Director of Schools with a vote of 4-1. Board member Bill Robinson voted for Satterfield.

Satterfield was gracious about the vote, saying that in Trousdale County some people will be very happy with their choice because it would allow him to continue to serve that district. He then joked that others might cry over their selection.

Wright reassured board members that she would not let them down and that Wilson County is a place she is very passionate about.

Wright, whose grown children are residents of Wilson County, said this is an area she has had her eye on for quite some time.

“Wilson County has been under the radar. People are surprised about the quality of life here and the quality of the school district,” she told The Wilson Post. “I am looking forward to how far we can go to making it even better.”

Contract negotiations will begin this week, according to Board Chairman Don Weathers, and once her new title is official, Wright plans to relocate to Wilson County for the job – and for personal reasons. She is expecting her first grandchild this fall.

Weathers said Wright has an “abundance of experience” and that he is pleased with the board’s choice.

“We are looking forward to taking advantage of that experience and expanding our goals. Negotiations usually go well. I’m excited to wrap this up,” he said.

Wright applied for the position in 2013 and was one of the top two finalists for the job – with Dr. Tim Setterlund. The board selected Setterlund for the role; however, after issues regarding personal misconduct came to light, he was allowed to retire.

Mary Ann Sparks has served as the Interim Director of Schools since Setterlund's departure.

She will resume her job as Wilson County Schools Human Resource Supervisor once a new director is officially named.
