An off-duty Mt. Juliet police officer escaped severe injuries when a suspected impaired wrong-way driver hit him head on early Sunday morning.
Mt. Juliet Police Lt. Tyler Chandler declined to release the officer's name pending a Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) investigation. However, he said the male officer was treated and released at the scene of the accident that occurred around 2:15 a.m. on Weakly Lane near Rockdale Fellowship Road.
"Thankfully, there were no serious injuries as a result of the crash," Chandler said.
The driver of the vehicle traveling the wrong way and occupant are facing multiple charges from THP.
According to Chandler, the officer was traveling home when he was hit by the vehicle traveling the wrong way in his lane. He said in an effort to reduce the impact, the officer attempted to come to a near stop just before the car slammed into his patrol car.
"He (the officer) took off Sunday to rest but was back to work Monday," Chandler noted.
